NEC Guidelines for Fence to Live Parts

The NEC states in Article 110.31 Enclosure for Electrical Installations that installations other than that described in 110.31(D) require a wall, screen or fence to enclose an outdoor electrical installation to deter access from unqualified persons.

The minimum distance between the fence and the live parts of the electrical installation are stated in Table 110.31 of the National Electrical Code.

Using the Fence to Live Parts Calculator

The Fence to Live Parts Distance Calculator allows you to specify the live parts voltage and a desired distance. The tool calculates whether the distance “Complies” or “Does Not Comply” with the given nominal voltage per NEC Article 110.31.

The live parts voltage should be the highest nominal voltage being utilized by the live electrical parts.

The distance can be given in meters or feet. You can choose the unit using the dropdown menu.
